The course highlights language as central to issues involving social inequalities. Students will explore case studies of social injustice focusing on language ideologies, language policies and laws, and social hierarchies influenced by linguistic practices. Potential topics include racism, hate speech, standard languages, censorship, disability, gender, workplace discrimination, assimilation, and disinformation.
At least 0.5 course from Arts and Humanities or Social Science and registration in 3rd or 4th year.
