Homer’s Odyssey, Aristotle’s Ethics, the Hebrew Bible, and St. Augustine’s Confessions influenced both the ages in which they were composed and subsequent Western thought. This course examines these texts, the distinctive and often conflicting ideals for the individual and society they depict, and the larger debates they embody and reflect.
