The class examines the work of iconic Enlightenment thinkers, Montesquieu, Voltaire, and Rousseau, and later writers who interpreted and challenged Enlightenment claims, including Edmund Burke, Alexis de Tocqueville, and John Stuart Mill. We also read authors outside the traditional canon, including Mary Wollstonecraft, Frederick Douglass, and Virginia Woolf.
Registration in third year or above, any module.
